The 2019 Lyfebulb–UnitedHealth Group Innovation Challenge will recognize the top Patient Entrepreneurs developing innovative ideas for better management of depression and anxiety using healthcare information technology, medical devices, diagnostics, consumer products, or services. Patient Entrepreneurs are individuals with a chronic disease, or those who have a close relative or loved one with a chronic disease, who have founded or lead a company bringing innovative solutions to the market place.

Mission


The Lyfebulb–UnitedHealth Group Innovation Challenge will bring together Patient Entrepreneurs with key opinion leaders, patient advocates, and leadership from UnitedHealth Group as well as Lyfebulb to promote awareness, discussions, and connections around depression and anxiety, as well as innovation in the care of those affected.

Finalists will receive an invitation to UnitedHealth Group headquarters to pitch their solutions, where a panel of judges, including healthcare professionals, patients and patient advocates, business leaders, and industry experts, will award a $25,000 monetary grant to the most innovative, impactful business.

Award & Judging Criteria

The award is open to Patient Entrepreneurs developing companies using healthcare information technology, medical devices, diagnostics, and/or consumer products or services that disrupt and shape the future care and management of patients with depression or anxiety.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for the 2019 Lyfebulb-UnitedHealth Group Innovation Challenge if:

  • You work on innovative ideas and concepts for better care and management of depression or anxiety using healthcare information technology, medical devices, diagnostics, and/or consumer products or services; and
  • You, or a family member or loved one, have lived with depression or anxiety; and
  • Your idea is something other than a pharmaceutical or drug innovation.

WHAT ARE THE JUDGING CRITERIA?

The judging panel will look for evidence in the following categories:

  • Patient Entrepreneur story
  • Degree of innovation
  • Impact on patient needs
  • Feasibility of development and implementation into the marketplace

The Judges

Why do patient entrepreneurs matter?

Because they are personally motivated by their own disease, or that of a loved one, Patient Entrepreneurs have a unique ability to create value-added solutions beyond therapy. Our aim is to support user-driven innovation and provide a laser-focus on solutions for providing a higher quality of life for those living with depression or anxiety.

APPLICATIONS


Lyfebulb-UnitedHealth Group: Innovation Challenge & Award Application 2019 Finalists will be provided an expenses-paid trip to UnitedHealth Group headquarters to present their innovative solution. One entrepreneur will be awarded the 2019 Lyfebulb-UnitedHealth Group Innovation Award, consisting of a $25,000 monetary grant to grow their company. Applicants must be a Patient Entrepreneur (someone who has been affected by depression and/or anxiety either as a patient or through a close relative or loved one). Applying companies must be headquartered in the United States or Canada (except for Quebec). Applications were open through Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 11:59PM EDT.
