Whatever we do in the healthcare space, it is eventually meant for the greater good of patients, which is why today the aim of modern healthcare is shifting towards value-based reimbursement and with that the process is getting modified accordingly. Gradually, patient-centric care is becoming prevalent. The current standards require enhanced patient experience, and that comes with improved quality, coordinated care at a reduced cost.

CMS, when releasing the fact sheet for Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program for the year 2016, said in a statement, “We now pay hospitals for inpatient acute care services based on the quality of care, not just the quantity of services provided.” Backing this statement was the fact that out of the four quality domains, patient experience of care bore 25% of the weight. This led to hospitals working earnestly towards enhancing the patient experience and utilizing the massive potential to qualify for the bonus and improve on current standards.

Patient experience is an essential component of the IHI Triple Aim, a schema for elevating the standards of providers’ performance:

Fortunately, health systems know that patient satisfaction isn’t just a tool for a performance bonus. Improving patient satisfaction is a way to identify gaps in care delivery and develop quality services. Also, according to a survey conducted by a health system found that out of 1,019 adults interviewed, 85% were dissatisfied with at least one aspect of their providers. Creating a patient-centric industry where experience and satisfaction of patients are overlooked is almost impossible!

How this tech startup drew the attention of Gavi, Gates and Google

Google.org has announced a new partnership to support Nexleaf Analytics, a Los Angeles-based startup that builds wireless sensors turning everyday objects like refrigerators and cookstoves into connected devices.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is matching a $2 million contribution from Google.org in a collaboration resulting from INFUSE, an accelerator launched by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to identify innovations that can modernize the way vaccines are delivered.

Nexleaf builds wireless sensor devices and data analytics tools such as ColdTrace, a wireless remote temperature monitoring technology that protects vaccines, and StoveTrace, a cloud based remote monitoring system that monitors the use of improved cookstoves. With funding from this new partnership, Nexleaf will now develop an analytics framework, gathering data from the countries its technology reaches, in order to share data with other governments looking to make evidence-based decisions regarding vaccine delivery.

“We focus on: How do you get vaccines safely to kids, stored at the right temperatures, fixing problems with refrigerators along the way?” Nithya Ramanathan, president and co-founder of Nexleaf, told Devex. “Everybody brings their piece of the puzzle and what we bring is data.”

Before scaling its work on refrigerators and cookstoves, Nexleaf started collecting data on refrigerators one clinic at a time, and data on cookstoves one household at a time. CIOs find themselves in the thick of their firms’ “digital transformation” efforts, in which pervasive computing becomes integrated into every aspect of the business, and changes them all. As CIOs build the infrastructure for this connected, measured, analyzed real-time world, there is more emphasis on cloud and data analytics, and improved customer-facing technology.

We asked nearly 20 CIOs to name their priorities for 2017, which reflect different approaches to the larger story of digital change. Here are highlights of their responses:

Priority 1: Make better use of corporate data.

“We’ll further scale and mature our use of data analytics across the enterprise,” Intel CIO Paula Tolliver says. The company has already used data to make quicker manufacturing decisions and optimize things like inventory management. It now sees an opportunity to “better network together all of that knowledge and expertise and expand our data assets.”

In United Parcel Service’s push to improve information security and system reliability, develop integrated technology and experiment with emerging IT, one common thread is “access to data at the right time for the right purpose and in the right context,” CIO Juan Perez says.

Making better use of data sometimes means putting it in customers’ hands. In an effort to help Chicago communities build their own Internet of Things solutions, Brenna Berman, the city’s department of innovation and technology commissioner and CIO, will continue to make the city’s open data a platform for developers by providing networks, sensors and other “smart” components.

At Royal Caribbean Cruises, CIO Mike Giresi is working to modernize its 27-year-old reservation software, and is deploying software containers and data analytics to get there. His teams are working to better use data to provide a more personalized experience for guests, a process that includes significant systems integrations, which Mr. Giresi calls a “monumental undertaking.”

Priority 2: Experiment further with AI and IoT.
